Bogus Emails

Recently I have been receiving emails for what seem like miracle products. One in particular advertising a new VOIP Phone system that will save you a fortune.  VOIP phone systems are telephone systems that use the internet and are probably the future of telephones. There are some very reputable dealers out there so not all emails about this are bogus.

However in this case it is. The hyperlink in the email actually takes you to a website that has nothing to do with the subject and is either trying to get you to buy something else or to put malware.

So how do you know? Well here are some things to look out for.

  1. The email looks amateur
  2. The address of the sender looks like a private address not a company one, especially if it is hotmail or gmail.
  3. There is no link to remove yourself from a mailing list
  4. the deal looks far too good to be true.

It is not always easy to spot and some of these emails are very professionally put together. So if, when you click a link, a webpage opens that you were not expecting, close it immediately and then run a virus scan.

Now many of you will get regular emails offering you medication online. Diet pills, hair restoration or health supplements these pills come in many sizes and types all claiming to give you your every desires. So what is our Supa Swap advice?

Ok, first of all, you all must now know, because I have told you many times before, not to trust anything you get sent on the web so with this in mind you will start to smell a rat.

Secondly the fact that these medications seem to be offering you something unbelievable at a small cost must be slightly suspicious.

If you were to speak to any doctor on the subject the first thing they would tell you would be to only trust medications from reputable sources. The reputable sources that I am referring to are of course Pharmacies, Chemists and of course the doctor himself.

So in short when buying something from an email that was sent to you without you being asked, buyer beware.

What do you do if you get a lot of emails retuned to you that you do not remember sending?

Well this is a bit of a problem on the internet and something that happened to me last week. I was literally receiving hundreds of emails which were undeliverable.

Well the first thing I did was contact my Hosting Company and ask if my website had been hacked. They assured me that I was still secure but pointed out that these emails had been sent from an email address that was not mine but my address had been set as the return address.

I did a little research on the sending email and I do not think they know anything about it either.

This was the action of someone sending out emails of a very suspicious nature and they did not want to be traceable.

So what can you do? Well unfortunately not much. You could set up a rule (if you know how to) in your email programme (Outlook for example) so that all mails with the attributes of these mails are deleted. Or you can just wait it out. Eventually they will stop.

Now we have mentioned Facebook before. In fact only last week and this week we would like to expand on the issues that are connected with using the largest social networking site in the world. Actually that statement does not really do facebook justice, it is actually the largest website full stop in the world and complete internet phenomena.

It is very important you take care what information you post online. Facebook is a great tool for identity theft and like all things on the internet facebook should be used with care because of this.

Now many of you have facebook pages, I have one even Supa Swap has one. What many of you do not know is that you can be very specific about what information is displayed about you. Do you want people to see you telephone number, your date of birth etc. Theses are all control that are available.

A Business Fan Page

Some of you may have businesses with facebook fan pages. Quick tip here, do not set up a profile (like a person) for your business, you run the risk of facebook shutting it down. On your business fan page, do you want people being able to comment or post statuses. Also remember if you do have a negative comment, this page is your marketing page so just delete it, you have control.

One further comment, if you use facebook for marketing, do not put negative comments on yourself, "It is raining here, really dull", "The customers are being really difficult today", remember this is your public face and your customers may read this.
